Costumes

Costumed readers are a fantastic way to add flair, warmth, friendliness, fun, and excitement to an event as well as bringing cohesiveness to a themed event. In no way do we believe that it cheapens our craft. We are not actors but realize we are entertainers. So while we are learned professional experts in the ancient wisdom tools we use, we like to be light hearted and fun too.

In fact, 3 of Cups likes and is known for dressing up but we are equally comfortable not. Our main costume style of dress is of the Hollywood archetype of medieval or country Gypsy Fortune Teller; however, some of us have dressed up in Classic Witch or Warlock, African High Priestess, Pirate, Court Jester, Harry Potteresque, Sorcerer, Belly Dancerish, Spiritual / Angelic, Goddess, Arabian and other costumes. Other than Jasper and Jucy, the majority of our readers are only assured to have a Fortune Teller / Gypsy and Psychic costume.

If you prefer we don't dress up, we can take instructions from you as to how you would like us to appear (classic black dressy, casual, or dress as yourself); however, we are known for our costumes and guests really appreciate it.

Fortune Teller / Gypsy | Psychic / Spiritual | Court Jester / Mardi Gras | Pirate | Arabic / Belly Dancer / Genie | Witch / Sorcerer / Wizard | Spage Age / Futuristic / Fantasy

Fortune Teller / Gypsy

The most popular all year costume for our readers to wear is the Fortune Teller / Gypsy look and is great for all occasions and types of events.  There are a number of different elements to this look which can include scarves (a tied, loose, or wrapped (turban) head, hip, and/or shoulder often with tassels); hooped or dangling earrings; long tiered or flowing skirt; a blouse with poofy or flowing sleeves; necklaces of chain, coin, gemstones, and/or pearls; hooped, gemstone, charms, chain, or coin bracelets / cuffs; flats, Mary-Jane's, and pointy heeled shoes or boots. The costume tends to be multi-layered as the Fortune Teller wore their money and their valuables as well as the practical usefulness of being able to adjust their body temperature by taking off, moving down, or putting on clothing pieces.  Often some of the pieces of clothing are very vibrant, colourful, and patterned of roses, paisley, or other prints.    For men the look is a pair of dark slacks, paisley or solid colour head scarf and possibly a neck scarf too, rings and/or metal / gem necklace, vest, and a plain or patterned shirt.  There are also a number of different styles of Fortune Teller / Gypsy looks ranging from 14th century Medieval, 15th-17th century Renaissance, and 18th-19th century European and Victorian periods.

A little known fact: The general public often uses the termrya Gypsy or Bohemian when describing traveling people who use cards, crystal ball, tea leaf reading, or palm to earn a living. These group of people actually preferred to be called Rom, Roma, or Romani (depending on their tribe) and consider the term Gypsy a slight. The term Gypsy comes from Egypt because many Rom came from Egypt as they traveled through Europe. Not all Rom originate from Egypt. TOP

Psychic / Spiritual

The next popular all year costume is Psychic / Spiritual.  This costume goes two ways: 1. Dark and mysterious or 2. Light and angelic.  The dark and mysterious costume is usually all black with silver accents and gem / crystal and spiritual accessories.  The base is often a simple shirt / blouse, pant / skirt, in luxurious, delicate, and/or shiny fabrics (silk, velvet), and sometimes with a cloak or hooded garment or head/shoulder scarf. The light and angelic is often white or pastel colours and the look is flowy and sparkly.

A little known fact:  The psychic look is etched in the public mind as being deep, unapproachable, and sometimes scary. This effect can work well when the event is going for a dramatic and mysterious effect. Some see the psychic look as associated with witchcraft even though the psychic look doesn't include a pointy hat! But also due to all the black, the psychic also can have an upscale and chic look too. TOP

Court or Mardi Jester

The third most popular all year costume is the court or mardi gras jester and this costume tends to be suitable for Mardi Gras, circus, carnival, and other types of themed events.  This look consists of a multi pointed floppy funny hat or hood with bells at the end of each point (symbolized to look like the ears and tail of a donkey); a tunic (often with a checkered pattern), stockings (checkered or a different solid colour for each stockinged leg); thigh or knee high pantaloons or poofy shorts, pointy and/or curly toed flat shoes. Mardi Gras jesters wear the colours of purple, yellow, and green.  Court Jesters were popular in the 11-13th century Middle Ages.

A little known fact:  Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday.  This is an all out party before one enters Lent, the religious practice of abstaining from vices.  There are three kinds of court jesters or fools.  One was a natural and taken in by the court as the family often couldn't take care of them so the wealthiest of the community did; one which was incredibly bright, witty, and learned; and one which was someone who didn't have or want much social couth and enjoyed doing and saying whatever they pleased whether society accepted it or not. TOP

Pirate

Our pirate costume is a lot of fun and is suitable for boat cruises, when a guest of honour is really into pirates, Halloween, product launches, or any time it fits into your theme or you just want us in the Pirate look!!  For our male readers, the costume consists of an authentic looking pirate vest, pantaloons, waist belt, pirate boots, pirate hat, chemise, and clip on hoop earring.  Usually the male reader is not shaved and has a bit of facial scruff.  For females the look is similar though they may wear a dress or skirt instead!! TOP

Arabic / Turkish / Belly Dancer / Genie

The Arabic, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Eastern Europe, Belly Dancer, Genie look is great for exotic themed events, promotions, and product launches.  The Turkish / Eastern European look for the female is similar to the Fortune Teller and the male look includes a red turkish cap, authentic bloomed pants and shirt, knee high boots, and a vest. The Belly Dancer /Genie outfit consists of belly dance pants (sometimes with an overskirt), belly dance top and/or jacket, hip coin scarf, head scarf (sometimes with coins), turkish hat with veil, or turban, tribal type jewelry, bangles, and sparkly or curly pointed shoes. The male wears blooming pants, with or without a shirt, a Middle Eastern vest, with or without a Tarpus or Fez hat, and pointy shoes. When you are looking for wishes to come true, this is a fantastic costume choice. TOP

Witch / Sorcerer / Wizard

The female witch costume comes with a pointy black or orange hat in various materials combined with the psychic look and some of our readers like adding a black wig and pointy shoes. The wizard is the female counterpart to the witch. The wizard where's a pointed hat with stars and moons on it along with a black shiny starred cloak or goes for an earthy look with a hooded brown peasant tunic and slacks. This was very popular with the Harry Potter book launches and is still popular especially during Halloween, related product launches/promotions, adventure movies, etc..TOP

Space Age / Futuristic / Fantasy

Here we create costumes on the fly... the Space Age / Futuristic look is often in silver and we can often re-create the other costumes such as Fortune Teller in an updated space agey look. Fantasy costumes could be anywhere from a Wizard of Oz Witch, Winged Fairy, or some other interesting being from the earth or sky. This costume works well when related to a movie or theme that's out of this world. TOP
